Written speaking assessment

ICAO English mock test with a written report

You record the tasks on a mobile phone at a convenient time. We mark each answer against the six ICAO descriptors and send a written report with an estimated level and the two main priorities for improvement.

No lesson or appointment is required, and the tasks follow the format of your own test.

Summary

  • Fee From £29
  • Report Within five working days
  • Priority service 48 hours, £19 extra
  • Marked by An aviation English assessor
  • Test formats TEA, ELPAC, RELTA and EALTS

How it works

The procedure in three steps

You record your answers at a convenient time. We mark the recording in the same way as an examiner, scoring each descriptor separately, and the lowest score sets the level.

01

Tell us which test you are taking

Please use the form at the foot of this page. We reply with payment details and send the tasks as soon as payment is received. The tasks are sent only after payment, so that the answers cannot be rehearsed.

02

Record your answers in one take

Open the tasks when you are ready and begin recording within one minute. The recording must be made on a mobile phone in a single take, with the camera on and your face visible. A scripted answer cannot be marked for fluency or interactions, and in that case the report will say so instead of giving a level.

03

Receive your report

The report is sent within five working days, and most are sent sooner. It contains six descriptor scores, an estimated ICAO level, quotations of the phrases that lost marks and a short plan for the weeks before your test.

The report

Contents of the report

The report normally runs to four or five pages and is written individually for each candidate.

  • A score from 1 to 6 for each of the six descriptors: pronunciation, structure, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension and interactions
  • An estimated ICAO level, which is the lowest of the six scores
  • Quotations from your recording showing where marks were lost
  • The two main priorities for improvement, with a plan for the weeks before your test

Example of the summary table

DescriptorScoreComment
Pronunciation5Clear under pressure
Structure4Errors in past tenses when reporting
Vocabulary5Paraphrases effectively
Fluency5Recovers from false starts
Comprehension5Understood the non-routine detail
Interactions5Checks and confirms appropriately
Estimated level4Limited by structure

This example shows the layout only and does not describe an actual candidate. Each report is written from the candidate's own recording.

Points to note

The limits of a mock test

No certificate is issued

Only an approved test centre can award a level for your licence. A mock test shows your present standard before you pay for the official test, and what needs attention if you are not yet ready.

Interactions require a conversation

A monologue cannot show how a speaker deals with a misunderstanding. The full report therefore includes a transmission containing an inconsistency, and the two-round option adds questions written from your first answers.

Refunds

If the recording is unusable or the report is late, the fee is refunded in full. We do not refund a completed report because the candidate disagrees with the estimate, since an accurate assessment is the service provided.

Questions about the mock test

Is this an official ICAO English test?

No. It is a mock test marked against the ICAO rating scale, using the six descriptors applied by examiners. A licence requires a result from an approved test centre, and the mock test shows whether you are ready to book one.

Which test formats do you cover?

We cover TEA, ELPAC, RELTA, EALTS and interviews conducted by national authorities. Please tell us which test you are taking, and the tasks will follow its format. Further information is given on the TEA and ELPAC pages.

Why are the tasks sent only after payment?

A rehearsed answer gives no indication of how you will perform on the day. The tasks used for marking are therefore kept back and never published.

Can you rate interactions from a recording?

Not from a single monologue. The full report includes a transmission containing an inconsistency, so that the correction of a readback and requests for clarification can be assessed. For a full rating of interactions we recommend the two-round option, in which the follow-up questions are written from your first answers.

What if I read my answers from a script?

The report will say so, and no estimated level will be given. Recordings must be made in a single take with the camera on and your face visible, and must be started within one minute of opening the tasks. A scripted answer cannot be marked for fluency or interactions.

How long does a report take, and can it be sent sooner?

The standard time is five working days, and most reports are sent sooner. The priority service provides a report within 48 hours for an additional £19.

How do I pay?

By bank transfer, or by invoice where a company is paying. Reports are paid for in advance, before the tasks are sent.

Who marks the test?

Every report is marked by Anil Dave, who has taught English to professionals for ten years in four countries and prepares pilots and controllers for ICAO assessments. Further details are given in the About section of the home page.
